BiPAP (Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure):
-
- Provides two pressure levels: higher pressure during inhalation (IPAP) and lower pressure during exhalation (EPAP).
- Used for more complex breathing disorders, including central sleep apnea, COPD, and neuromuscular disorders.
- More comfortable for patients who struggle to exhale against the constant pressure of CPAP.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure):
- Provides a constant, fixed pressure of air to keep airways open.
- Used mainly for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- Simplest and most common type of PAP therapy.
- Pressure level is set by a sleep specialist based on sleep study results.
- Prevents airway collapse during sleep by delivering the set pressure throughout the night.
- Can be uncomfortable for some patients due to fixed pressure.
APAP (Auto-adjusting Positive Airway Pressure):
- Automatically adjusts the pressure throughout the night based on the patient’s needs.
- More advanced than CPAP; ideal for those who need variable pressure due to changing airway resistance.
- Detects and responds to changes in breathing, such as snoring or apneas, and adjusts accordingly.
- Preferred for patients with variable breathing patterns or changing needs throughout the night.
- Typically more comfortable due to pressure variation.
